TWAC WINS GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY TOURISM AWARD
We win the prestigious global sustainability award. This is our media release:
A local Tasmanian travel agent has won the coveted global award for sustainable tourism, presented over the weekend in Croatia by peak tourism industry body Skål.
Travel with a Cause Inc, now into its 16th year, has operated local volunteer-based environmental and community projects, and has a division designing and implementing corporate sustainability engagements. It has also a history of worthy projects including saving thousands of hectares of river reef and rainforest in Fiji and taking computers from schools destined for landfill and sending them to Africa.
Jane Johnston is co- founder and CEO of Travel with a Cause, Australia’s only registered not-for-profit charitable travel and tourism operator, “Make no mistake, this means we are the world’s top ranking sustainable tourism operator,” says Jane.
Skål is the recognized international body overseeing and representing travel and tourism operator’s worldwide.
During the COVID-19 pandemic Travel With a Cause survived the sudden cessation of national and international travel by expanding on its existing sustainability tours and creating new ones. Some 70% of travel agents in Australia went out of business.
Travel With a Cause has designed and conducted beach clean-ups, tree planting, land care and wildlife projects, orientation for international students and corporate greening activities. National Geographic have recently nominated Travel with a Cause their Australian representative to deliver sustainability modules to students, which is their next project.
